Which Boiler Is Right For You?

It’s important to choose the right boiler for your home. If your boiler has broken down or you’re concerned about the appropriateness of your existing boiler, this short guide is designed with you in mind. Maybe now is the right time to get a new boiler?

Conventional boiler

Conventional boilers come with a storage tank and water cylinder. They work by heating the water within the central heating system and then storing it in the separate storage tank, which is usually situated in the loft. They are most appropriate for homes where there is a high demand for hot water at the same time, homes that have two bathrooms, for instance and where there is ample storage space.

System boiler

System boilers come with a water cylinder (usually located within the airing cupboard), but do not need a storage tank. They are most appropriate for homes where there is a relatively high demand for hot water that might need to be released at the same time. However, it’s important to note that the hot water can take a short while to come through. Similar to conventional boilers, system boilers can run out of hot water, meaning it might be necessary to wait a short time whilst the system refills.

Combination boiler

The combi boiler is extremely popular across the UK. As the name suggests, parts are combined into one compact unit and it heats the water directly from the mains without the need for a separate water tank/cylinder, making it ideal for homes that are limited on storage space. Combi boilers are also particularly useful as they allow for unlimited hot water usage, a clear advantage against the other two types where it is necessary to wait for the storage tank to refill. However, they are perhaps not preferable for homes where lots of people need hot water at the same time.

Other boiler considerations

It’s also important to consider which boiler manufacturer offers the best boiler and service for your needs. For instance, if you’re looking for a brand that already has a strong reputation in the UK market and is highly recognised for its customer service, why not consider a Worcester-bosch boiler? On the other hand, if you’re looking for a combination boiler with a complimentary, no-catch 10-year guarantee, why not consider a Baxi boiler? You need to consider what's more important beforehand.

Aside from the type of boiler and boiler manufacturer, you might also wish to consider the size and position of the boiler. Whilst these might already be decided for you based on the type of boiler/boiler manufacturer chose, you can alter the position depending on the level of insulation and art tightness in the property and you can also alter the position of the outside flue.
